What is RSS?
RSS is a technology that helps you keep track of your favorite websites. It saves you time and helps you get relevant information quickly after it is published, while you decide when you read it. Millions of web users around the world already use it to keep track of their favorite websites.
It’s like a ‘news feed’ you subscribe to, the same you would do with a magazine that is delivered to you periodically. However instead of it coming in your physical mail box when the magazine is published, it is delivered to your ‘RSS Reader’ every time your favorite website is updated.
Why Use RSS?
Before RSS existed, you had to keep track of a website by ‘bookmarking’ it in your browser and then manually returning to the site on a regular basis to see what content had been added.
With this ‘old skool’ approach, you as the web surfer had to do all the work. When trying to track many websites at once, it got even more complicated and you missed information when you forgot to check your bookmarks.
With RSS, the website updates are delivered to you via a ‘feed’ of your favorite website. Reading this feed via your favorite RSS Reader saves you time, which is something we at Alexve.com definitely like!
How to Use RSS and Subscribe to Alexve.com?
1 . Get an RSS Reader
The first thing you will want to do if you want to start reading websites via RSS is to find yourself a nice RSS Feed Reader. There are many feed readers out there with a variety of features – however a good place to start is with the free and web based ones like Google Reader or Bloglines. Either one will do if you are starting out (I use Google Reader btw, which also works great on my mobile phone. This allows me to even read the updates of the sites that I am tracking when I am on the go).
2. Subscribe to the Alexve.com feed and others
You can subscribe to our RSS Feed by adding the following feed url to your RSS Feed Reader:
Most sites provide links to their RSS feeds these day, which allow you to easily subscribe and stay up to date with the content of these sites. You will recognize a link to a RSS Feed by the orange RSS icon. Most RSS Feed Readers will also automatically recognize the website’s feed url if you point your reader to the homepage of the website you want to track (e.g. http://alexve.com).
3. Start Reading!
RSS Feed readers work a little like e-mail. As you subscribe to feeds, you will recognize unread items from the sites you are tracking as ‘bold’ items. As you click and open an item, you will see the latest update and can read it right there in the feed reader. You are given the option to click through to the actual posting on the site or move onto the next unread item – marking the last one as ‘read’. The best way to learn how to use a RSS Feed Reader is to subscribe to some feeds and give it a try.
Note: Some sites only give out a summary of their updates in their RSS Feed. If you want to read the full article, you will have to open the posting on their site. Here at Alexve.com you get the full article in your RSS Reader. We do like you it very much if you comment on the articles, so please visit the site via your Reader and share your opinion on the articles with everyone!
